Network Rail completed nine days of work to renew and strengthen Saxmundham junction on East Suffolk Line, converting it from manual to powered operation and upgrading signalling and infrastructure. The improvements support increased freight traffic to the Sizewell C construction site and resumed Greater Anglia services between Halesworth and Ipswich.

Malaysian rail suppliers can note the demand signal for junction renewal, signalling upgrades and freight-capacity works tied to major infrastructure projects, which are the kinds of packages that often create subcontracting opportunities.

Network Rail has thanked passengers for their patience during recent disruption to the East Suffolk caused by work to renew the Saxmundham junction. The junction needed to be renewed and strengthened as it will soon see a significant increase in freight trains passing over it, travelling to the construction site of the Sizewell C power plant. The first commercial freight train arrived at the Sizewell C site in September. The disruption began on Saturday 24 October and lasted for nine days. The Saxmundham junction connects the Leiston branch line with the East Suffolk Line. Network Rail engineers have converted the junction from manual operation to powered operation, and have installed modern equipment which will improve the junction’s operational flexibility and railway performance. Engineers also carried out work to improve signalling and infrastructure along the route. The work involved private contractors Balfour Beatty, working on behalf of Sizewell C, and Atkins, working with Network Rail. Following the completion of the work on the junction, Greater Anglia train services between Halesworth and Ipswich resumed this morning (Tuesday 3 November). Network Rail Anglia issued a statement acknowledging the inconvenience caused to passengers by the disruption and thanking them We’ve made significant progress on East Suffolk’s rail infrastructure this year, and I’m delighted these latest improvements have been completed on schedule. It’s a real credit to the dedication and expertise of our contractors and delivery partners. These upgrades will not only support the construction of Sizewell C but also deliver lasting benefits for local communities, helping to improve reliability and resilience for passenger services. Transporting materials by rail is a key part of our commitment to move 60% of bulk materials by rail or sea. Each train carries the equivalent load of up to 50 HGVs, and by the end of the year up to four trains a day will be serving our project, preventing thousands of HGV movements on East Suffolk’s roads every year.
