Swedish rail operator SJ has opened bookings for its 2026/27 winter timetable, including the return of direct sleeper trains between Stockholm and Narvik in northern Norway. Travellers can also book night trains to Umeå and the Swedish ski resorts around Duved, while a new combined train-and-bus service will connect Stockholm with Sälen from January.
Stockholm–Narvik: direct sleeper trains return in December
From 13 December 2026, passengers travelling between Stockholm and Narvik will once again be able to remain in the same sleeping or couchette accommodation throughout the journey, without changing trains in Boden.
The service runs through northern Sweden, serving destinations including Umeå, Luleå, Kiruna and Abisko before crossing the Norwegian border to Narvik. It provides access to Swedish Lapland, the Abisko National Park area and the mountains surrounding Narvik.
Under the new timetable, night train 94 is scheduled to leave Stockholm Central at 18:12 and arrive in Narvik at 12:43 the following day, after approximately 18.5 hours.
In the opposite direction, train 93 will depart Narvik at 14:48 and reach Stockholm at 10:13 the following morning. Timings may vary on individual dates.
The restored through service follows a new agreement between SJ and the Swedish Transport Administration, Trafikverket, covering December 2026 to December 2028. The contract provides for one daily return journey between Stockholm and Narvik, with sleeping and couchette accommodation.
Passengers currently travelling beyond Boden towards Kiruna, Abisko and Narvik must transfer from the Stockholm night train to a daytime connection. This requirement will disappear with the December timetable change.
Umeå and Duved: more overnight travel options
SJ will also continue operating its Stockholm–Umeå night trains under the northern Sweden contract.
The Stockholm departure is scheduled for 21:55, arriving in Umeå at 07:11 the following morning. The return service leaves Umeå at 21:23 and reaches Stockholm at 06:20.
Another overnight option serves the Jämtland region, connecting Stockholm with Östersund and Duved, near the Åre ski area.
SJ has received a new contract for the Stockholm–Östersund–Duved night trains, initially running from December 2026 until 13 June 2027. Extension options could keep the service operating until December 2031.
The operator is also refurbishing 11 couchette coaches and 46 sleeping cars used on its Jämtland services. Some refurbished vehicles have already entered operation, with the programme continuing until 2030.
New train connection to Sälen from January
For travellers heading to Sälen, SJ and ski resort operator SkiStar are introducing a combined train-and-bus service from Stockholm.
The service begins on 17 January 2027 and will operate on Sundays until 4 April. Passengers will travel by train to Mora, where a dedicated connecting bus will take them to the ski resorts.
Trains depart Stockholm at 09:44 and arrive in Mora at 13:31. For the return journey, trains leave Mora at 10:28 and reach Stockholm at 14:14, with connecting buses from Sälen.
The bus serves five stops: Lindvallen Snöcentret, Lindvallen Handelsområde, Högfjällshotellet, Tandådalstorget and Hundfjället.
One-way tickets for adults start at approximately EUR 53, including the train and bus journey. Discounts are available for younger passengers, pensioners and families. SkiStar is also offering discounts on selected accommodation and ski rental as part of the pilot project.
