Modal Group and Dunkerque-Port inaugurated a new intermodal terminal at Loon-Plage on 15 October 2026.
The 9.6-hectare terminal is located alongside the Loon-Plage railway yard in the western part of the Port of Dunkirk. Developed jointly by Modal Group and Dunkerque-Port, it has four 750-metre railway tracks, storage capacity for 800 TEU and parking spaces for 150 semi-trailers.
The terminal is open to all transport and logistics operators. It can handle semi-trailers, containers and swap bodies from 20 to 45 feet, including refrigerated units, tank containers and equipment for bulk cargo. Facilities also include maintenance services for intermodal loading units, wagons and locomotives, electrical connections for refrigerated containers and charging points for trucks.
Three weekly connections to Lyon, with Italy planned for 2027
Regular rail services between Dunkirk and Lyon Rhône Terminal at Port Édouard Herriot began on 3 September 2026, six weeks before the terminal's official inauguration. The connection operates three round trips per week.
The service is organised by Modal Group subsidiaries. DELTA RAIL manages the combined transport operations, TRAIX provides railway traction, and MODALIS supplies T3000NEO double-pocket wagons. TERMINAUX MULTIMODAUX operates the Dunkirk terminal, while ALTECH was responsible for infrastructure design.
The next phase is the planned extension of the route from Lyon to Piacenza in northern Italy during the first half of 2027. DELTA RAIL already operates a Lyon–Piacenza service, which could form part of a continuous rail corridor between the North Sea and northern Italy.
The terminal's location in Dunkirk's western port area also provides opportunities for connections with ferry and RoRo services linking France with the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Construction began following the laying of the foundation stone in November 2025. The partners estimate that the terminal could eventually support the transfer of up to 50,000 intermodal transport units annually from road to rail, with a potential reduction of approximately 70,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.
