Transport for Wales has proposed a Swansea Bay and West Wales Metro with new stations, extra services, a new platform at Swansea, track links and signalling-related enabling works. Phase A and Phase B plans are open for public feedback until 13 December 2026, with funding still to be secured.

The plan indicates future demand for civil works, track, and signalling packages that Malaysian suppliers can watch for as the project develops.

New plans have been revealed by Transport for Wales that could see new stations built along with more frequest services. The Swansea Bay and West Wales Metro covers two routes: the line between Swansea and Pembrey & Burry Port and the line between Swansea and Ammanford via Neath. These new proposals have been split into phases, which the public can now have their say on. Phase A sees up to two extra trains an hour between Swansea and Pembrey and Burry Port, allowing for better flexibility when planning journeys. A new station could be built at Cockett to connect communities to Swansea, Llanelli, Carmarthen and the rest of the country. Alongside this, a new platform would be built at Swansea as well as changes to Pembrey and Burry Port to allow trains to terminate and swap directions. Phase B would see an extra two trains per hour between Swansea and Ammanford via Neath – with new stations at Landore, Winsh-wen, Morriston, Llandarcy, Felindre, Pont-lliw and Ammanford. These new services would then connect with other trains at Neath, allowing onward travel to Cardiff. New track would link two railway lines, and the improvements would follow on from signalling improvements, which would make the new connections possible. Further development is needed on the plans before they can be delivered, and funding from the UK Government would need to be sourced before being delivered. The public can have their say on how they currently travel and if they would use the new stations and services. You can complete a survey on the Transport for Wales website. The survey will be live until the 13th December 2026. “If you use the train to travel for work or leisure or even if you never use the train in Swansea and West Wales, please tell us how things can be improved or what needs to happen for you to use the train. “We want the Swansea Bay and West Wales Metro to make traveling by train as easy and convenient as possible. To help us achieve that we need to know about your experiences and requirements.” Deputy Minister for Transport, Mark Hooper
