Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has announced that work to redevelop Bury Interchange into a modern and accessible transport hub will start later this month. Bury Interchange has been open for over 40 years, serving the community well during that time, with thousands of people passing through it every day. However, it’s now showing its age, and the investment in redevelopment will turn it into a proper gateway to the town centre. The work will be carried out in two phases: the first includes the construction of a new footbridge and improvements to the tram platforms; the next phase includes redevelopment of the whole of the interchange to make it easier for people to use the Bee Network, whether they are using the bus, tram, walking, wheeling or cycling. During most of the work, trams will continue running, although there will be short periods when they will be suspended, and advance notice will be provided when this is necessary. Included in the work is the new footbridge, which will connect Union Square and Pyramid Park, a new lift that will provide step-free access to the Metrolink platforms, resurfacing the Metrolink platforms and replacing the canopies, upgrading the lighting, signage and CCTV, and installation of improved passenger information displays and ticketing facilities. Before the full redevelopment of the interchange continues, the council will hold a public consultation this winter. Also planned for the second phase of the project are new apartments, with work on these due to start in 2028. A construction site compound will be established in part of the Metrolink car park, but most parking spaces will still be available during the first phase of the project, although it may be necessary to close the car park for short periods during this phase of work. Alternative Metrolink Park and Ride parking is available at Radcliffe and Whitefield. “The redevelopment of Bury Interchange will make journeys easier for people using Bee Network trams and buses and deliver vast improvements for Bury town centre. Starting this month, we will begin to turn this outdated facility into a modern, accessible and welcoming place, putting public transport at the heart of the town’s regeneration.” Vernon Everitt, Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester
